On March 22, 2025, four Gannon University students in the cybersecurity and software engineering programs won first place in a Capture the Flag competition at the BSidesROC conference in Rochester, New York. BSidesROC is a free, open hacker conference held annually that features speakers, tournaments and networking opportunities. The event is held in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology to connect students with potential employers.

In cybersecurity, Capture the Flag tournaments provide an engaging way for students to hone their skills by challenging individuals or teams to solve security problems and “capture” hidden strings of text for points. This process allows participants to practice their hacking skills in a controlled, real-world setting.

The team included seniors Nicholas Hubbard and Aashir Tuladhar, along with Zander Hunley, and first-year Gannon student Pratham Patel. They surpassed the second-place team from the Rochester Institute of Technology by 125 points.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work my team members contributed to solving these problems, and I’m also proud to bring the win home to Gannon after finishing third in last year’s competition,” said Hubbard. “I learned almost everything I needed to know to solve these problems through my classes and the work experience I gained as a work-study student in the Computer and Information Science department at Gannon.”
